The 2016 BET Awards opened on Sunday night with an absolutely epic surprise appearance from both Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar. Fittingly performing her song “Freedom,” Bey brought the fire with an in-the-crowd opening sequence featuring recordings of Martin Luther King, Jr, a super-charged step-dancing interlude, pyrotechnics, water effects and Kendrick’s sudden arrival from beneath the stage.
