The rich have also preferred private schooling. Occasionally, they will even home school their children with a battalion of high-priced tutors. But the latest schooling trend for the very wealthy is even more of an undertaking: developing private schools exclusively for their children.
In Palm Beach, a 59-year-old chief executive of an industrial-distribution firm, has developed a 12,000-square-foot home that functions five days a week as a school house mansion exclusively for his five children.
“When you do a house from the ground up, you do it for how your family lives. Home schooling for us is a lifestyle, it’s not just one room,” the children’s mother told the Wall Street Journal. According to public records, the lot cost $1.84 million and it would sell for roughly $8.5 million to $9.5 million, according to an estimate by Patricia Mahaney, a sales agent at Palm Beach Brokerage Sotheby’s International Realty.
According to the Journal, math is taught on white board in an office, art projects are done on the outdoor lanai and piano lessons occur three times a week in a loft.
“Home schooling is about embracing life as a learning experience. You don’t need a chalkboard,” another mother home schooling her children from a mansion said.
