A Bangor University professor has reportedly found a lost Stanley Kubrick screenplay, entitled Burning Secret, based on Stefan Zweig’s 1913 novella of the same name. The so-called “leading Kubrick expert,” professor Nathan Abrams, says the film focuses on a “suave and predatory man” who befriends a young boy to get even closer to his mother.
He describes it as “the inverse of Lolita“ and has been speculated to be an adaptation Kubrick has always wanted to work on, and if Abram’s findings are legitimate, gives credence to the longstanding rumor. The script features a stamp from MGM and could have possibly been worked on while the director was working on Paths of Glory, which is possibly why this adaptation has never seen the light of day. It’s also possible the material may have been “too risqué” at the time despite being adapted later by director Andrew Birkin in 1988.
