A new patent (pictured below) shows that Motorola<\/a> may be working on a self-repairing display for a new smartphone. The device is envisioned to use a \u201cshape memory polymer\u201d instead of glass, which should be able to reshape itself and return to its original composition when heat is applied to the scratched area.<\/p>\n

The heat would come from the phone itself and enter a low-power mode while in the process via an app. The tech could allow the smartphone to analyze the display\u2019s structure, spot anomalies, and effectively fix any problems by remolding itself with heat as close to its original form as possible.<\/p>\n

The patent mentions the process is lengthy and\u00a0could be done overnight in a specifically-designed dock. It\u2019s also worth mentioning that the tech doesn\u2019t apply to cracked screens. Motorola already offers shatterproof displays with its Moto Z <\/a>Force lineup of phones. LG<\/a> also made a self-healing smartphone back in 2013 called the LG G Flex<\/a>, mostly distributed in Korea, although its screen was made of glass.<\/p>\n
