What’s up DJBooth, I’m Brendan Varan and this is First Thoughts, where we tell you whathappened, what you need to know, and what you need to listen to on Kanye West’s brand new album The Life Of Pablo.

Honestly it has been exhausting trying to figure out what the hell is going on with this album. We’ve had four different titles. From ‘So Help Me God’ to ‘Swish’ to ‘Waves’ to no title at all and ultimately The Life Of Pablo. we had multiple album covers, none of which were very inspiring. The tracklist that seemed to change by the week. We had huge singles there were ultimately scrapped from the record entirely. GOOD Friday’s series got off to a spotty start. Above all, Kanye has made a continuous spectacle of himself with involvement from countless major celebrities, highly-publicized and controversial tweets and of course Twitter beef with cool pants Wiz Khalifa.

After what seems like an eternity, we finally got to hear the new album and unveiled it at a massive listening event at Madison Square Garden. We know that it features contributions from some of the biggest names in music. Including Rihanna, The Weeknd, Kid Cudi, Chance The Rapper, Young Thug, new GOOD Music signee Desiigner and even Frank Ocean who appears on the album.

So what do you absolutely need to hear on the album? First up is the Ultra Light Beams, which is not only pure joy but also the
closest we get to Kanye’s promise of a gospel album. It features a heavenly choir and spotlight stealing verse from Chance The Rapper. Next up is perhaps the most controversial song, Famous. Where Kanye not only says that he might possibly have sex with Taylor Swift in the future, but that he is also responsible for her being famous. Lastly we have Wolves. We have waited over a year for this final version of Wolves but the long wait proved that it was indeed worth it. and that a Wolves CDQ is strong enough to even pull Frank Ocean out of hiding.

So how was it? Well despite the circus of an album rollout,it’s safe to safe Yeezy delivered. It felt like Kanye West the person, even though he said some things that might piss some people off, hasn’t what we’ve always most appreciated about Kanye has been his ability to speak his mind. The album itself was a return from the darkness that was Yeezus and towards a more positive light, at least for the most part, of the celebration of faith and family. The features all delivered. The production was on point. Most of all the album had a soul, it made you feel something and Kanye is always at his best when he makes you feel emotion.
