Best Sneaker Releases: January 2019 Week 5

Last week, Nike basketball paid tribute to both its past and future with the launch of Paul George’s third signature sneaker and a special tribute to Kobe Bryant’s historic 81-point game. On the other side of the industry, adidas revealed this year’s “Chinese New Year Hu” pack alongside Pharrell. We also saw the continuing of the newfound trend around hiking-ready silhouettes.

Nike React Element 87 “Touch of Lime” & “Hyper Fusion”

Release Date: January 29

Nike adds more options to its React Element 87 selection with new “Light Orewood” and “Racer Pink” colorways. Each translucent upper is joined by exposed stitching and reflective 3M accents, thus complementing each respective bright and bold color combo.

Nike Air Max 720 “Northern Lights” Pack

The Swoosh’s Air Max division takes a big leap into the future with the Air Max 720. For the first drop utilizing the tallest air bag yet, Nike draws inspiration from the Northern Lights phenomenon and its beautiful array of colors.

Nike Basketball “BHM” Pack

Release Date: February 1
Release Price:  $110-$150 USD, available via select Nike Basketball retailers and Nike SNKRS

Nike’s annual “BHM” celebration continues with the Kyrie 5, PG 3 and KD11. Each signature incorporates various African patterns to commemorate Black History Month. While the Kyrie 5 honors Kenyan culture, the PG 3 and KD 11 follow suit with nods to the Congo and Sierra Leone, respectively.

BAPE x adidas Football Pack

Release Date: February 1 & 2
Release Price:  $200 USD/each, available via Atlanta’s Social Status pop-up (Feb. 1) and adidas.com (Feb. 2)

To coincide with Super Bowl LIII, BAPE has connected with adidas Football for a collaborative capsule consisting of apparel and footwear dressed in BAPE’s signature camo pattern. The footwear range includes both casual and on-field options with the UltraBOOST and adizero 8.0, each of which is available in your choice of green or black camo.

adidas Originals LXCON “Active Blue” & “Active Purple”

Release Date: February 2
Release Price:  $120 USD, available via select adidas retailers and adidas.com

Inspired by early ’90s runners, the modernized adidas Originals LXCON makes its debut in “Cloud White/Active Blue-Core Black” and “Clear Brown/Active Purple-Shock Red.” Each colorway features a breathable mesh upper atop an EVA midsole and adiprene heel cushioning.

Air Jordan 5 “Varsity Royal”

Originally slated to release last week, the Air Jordan 5 “Varsity Royal” will officially hit shelves this weekend. The forthcoming drop pays homage to Michael Jordan’s old stomping grounds–E.A. Laney High School–with varsity maize accents to join its varsity royal base. Chenille material adds a gentle flair to the tongue’s Jumpman logo with midsole speckles rounding out the look.

Nike Zoom LeBron 3 “SuperBron”

The Nike Zoom LeBron 3 “SuperBron”–also the victim of a pushback–is seeing its first retail release. The “White/Varsity Maize-Varsity Red” colorway made its debut as an exclusive PE back in 2005 and has inspired the launch of the Nike LeBron 16 “SuperBron.”

Jordan Why Not Zer0.2 “BHM”

The Jordan Why Not Zer0.2 continues its mix of attention-grabbing color mashups with this “BHM” release. The performance-driven model marks the second signature sneaker for Russell Westbrook, and features teal, pink and yellow accents on its black and white base. Lastly, Nike’s “BHM” stamp is found on the sneaker’s medial side towards its pattern-heavy heel.

Air Jordan 2 “BHM”

The Air Jordan 2 joins the “BHM” celebration with an upper mixing black with red, blue and yellow accents. African Kente cloth influences the patterns with gold detailing on each heel and tongue.

Air Jordan 1 “Equality”

Black and sail make their way onto the Air Jordan 1 “Equality.” The offsetting combination welcomes the Air Jordan 1’s signature”WINGS”  branding nods on the lateral side with Carmelo Anthony’s logo taking the place of an expected Jordan stamp on the tongue. Patterns mentioned on previous “BHM” iterations are seen on its Swoosh with a large “EQUALITY” logo on the heel.
