Canon’s $70k CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 EF-Mount Cinema Lens

In 2010, the German nature filmmaker Ivo Nörenberg who’s known for Russland and has previously worked with David Attenborough, made a request to Canon. He was looking for a lens capable of incredible versatility to suit his work — it needed to be able to shoot animals about 4 feet tall at full frame from about 300 meteres away. It also needed to shoot wide landscapes, and be lightweight and compact enough despite the fact the lenses with zoom capabilities are often bulky.

Canon took on the challenge and after a few years delivered the CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 EF-mount cinema lens. The final product weighed in under 15 pounds, and 16 inches at 50-1000mm, and surpassed Nörenberg’s expectations with the addition of a 1.5x extender built onto the lens directly, giving it a 1500mm telephoto reach.

Today, Canon shares an in-depth look at the filmmaker’s review of the lens which you can watch above.
