“Planet Kosmos” Will Be the Next Font to Dominate Streetwear & Fashion

Used extensively in streetwear over the years by brands including Stussy, Bianca Chandon and Bodega, not to mention being placed at the forefront of Kanye West’s Life of Pablo tour merchandise, it seems the hype-train surrounding Old-English font might be coming to an abrupt halt in the near future.

According to Racked, both Kanye and Raf Simons have co-signed agreements with “Planet Kosmos” font creator Mads Rydahl which allows them to use it freely on future garms. We’ve already seen the font feature on Kanye’s YEEZY season 4 “Calabasas” invite merch, while Raf first debuted it in his SS17 range.

When the designers filed requests to use the font commercially, Rydahl cut a pretty generous deal by offering them both full licensing in return for a “compact disc with something you love or have created yourself.” Apparently, what he received in return was a selection of art projects and albums from ‘Ye, and a disc from Raf which included designs featuring his creation. No mention has been made of cash compensation.

Rydahl was inspired to create the font by imagining what it would look like on “a superfast electric motorcycle from a manga-like next millennium,” and as a huge fan of anime movies like Akira, it’s self-evident as to why Kanye was particularly attracted to the sci-fi-indebted lettering.

Look out for items bearing the “Planet Kosmos” font being previewed here as they drop. But in the meantime, check out this video breakdown of the ridiculous samples used on Late Registration.
